When Captain Cook discovered the Whitsundays in 1770 they were home to the Ngaro Aborigines. Nowadays, most of the 70 islands here in the Reef’s Marine Park are uninhabited, apart from the abundant wildlife in their tropical forests. The mainland’s Airlie Beach Marina is a popular base for island hopping, as is the marina on Hamilton Island, also home to Great Barrier Reef Airport. You can re-stock provisions and dine ashore at a handful of island resorts. As you would expect, the reef diving and snorkelling are spectacularly good, and from July to September you can go whale watching. Fantastic sailing among the wonders of nature just doesn’t get any better than this!
