Volvo Ocean Race leaves Boston
May 18th, 2009
The Volvo Ocean Race has left Boston and is heading to Galway in Ireland. After a three week stay in the US city, racers headed out into the Atlantic on the seventh leg of the ten leg tour.
Having begun in Spain in October, the racers had to tackle heavy fog when leaving the New England city.
The race is held every four years and points are awarded to those that reach a port first, arrive at certain markers along the way and during in-port racing.
A member of the Puma team, which is currently in second position, said in an email to the official website that it was "really freezing" but that "seas are quite flat" and they were currently enjoying a "pleasant sailing experience" in the Atlantic.
When leaving Boston on Saturday the city's mayor wished the skippers luck before a local clergyman blessed the fleet, the Boston Herald reported.

"I would recommend Dream Marine to others. Everyone was easygoing and helpful. I didn’t mind who I talked to. It was all good. Shame having to come back to London afterwards.
Come on Chris… when’s the next one?"
