Aug 26th, 2009
A British teenager is set to become the youngest ever sailor to circumnavigate the globe solo in a yacht. After a 30,000-mile voyage 17-year-old Mike Perham is set to become a record breaker this week but still may have turbulent seas ahead of him.
He is set to enter British waters once again but is due to be challenged by Hurricane Bill, which is set to disrupt weather conditions as he heads for home.
Speaking to the Times, he said: "I'm very much looking forward to being back. It's all getting very exciting now. I'm really looking forward to being in my own room and having a fridge in the house and little luxuries like home cooking and having friends around.
"There have been a couple of times when I was thinking, 'crikey, what am I doing here?' I've had lots of knocks and bruises and bumps but nothing serious, thankfully."
The current record for the youngest person to sail solo around the world non-stop is held by Australian David Dicks, who was 18 when he completed his journey.

"I would recommend Dream Marine to others. Everyone was easygoing and helpful. I didn’t mind who I talked to. It was all good. Shame having to come back to London afterwards.
Come on Chris… when’s the next one?"
