Pilgrim cup turned into time trial as a result of weatherA fleet of amateur clipper sailors preparing to compete in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race have seen what effect bad weather can have on the best laid plans.

According to the Yorkshire Post, the ten-strong fleet should have been competing in the Pilgrim Cup, a race from Gosport to Grimsby this week.

However, the last event before the global race, which starts on September 13th, had to be modified because of the bad weather, the newspaper reported.

Instead of an open race, sailors were instead instructed to complete the journey in time trial conditions to allow for a stopover in Brighton.

Among the fleet was the Hull & Humber yacht, which will take place in the ten-month round-the-world race after coming second in the event in 2008.

Crews on the boat consist of amateur sailors and a professional skipper.

Meanwhile, a disabled sailor from Kent has become the first quadriplegic woman to sail around the UK on her own.ADNFCR-2431-ID-19347914-ADNFCR

"I would recommend Dream Marine to others. Everyone was easygoing and helpful. I didn’t mind who I talked to. It was all good. Shame having to come back to London afterwards.

Come on Chris… when’s the next one?"
