Controversy over 1983 yacht race continuesThe yacht racing world is facing a resurfacing of controversy that has raged since Australia II prized the America's Cup from the New York Yacht Club's 126-year stranglehold in 1983.

Ben Lexcen was credited for the revolutionary winged keel design of the vessel, but the US organisation later contested the legitimacy of the win, claiming the boat was designed by an international team - in conflict with the competition's rules.

Dutch designer Peter van Oossanen - now an Australian citizen - has spoken out for the first time, saying that Lexcen's role in the process was minimal.

He revealed that the late Australian hero, who died in 1988, contributed less than ten per cent to the development and was absent at key stages of the design.

Mr Van Oossanen also stated that he was paid thousands of dollars to keep quiet about his role in the boat's creation, but felt compelled to speak out after it seemed like he and his Dutch colleagues were written out of history.

Meanwhile, the yachts racing in the Clipper Round the World competition are currently heading south along the coast of Brazil as they aim to be the first to reach Rio de Janeiro.

Yacht Testimonials
"I would recommend Dream Marine to others. Everyone was easygoing and helpful. I didn’t mind who I talked to. It was all good. Shame having to come back to London afterwards.

Come on Chris… when’s the next one?"
