Mexican beach restoration plan hits snag
Nov 2nd, 2009
Those considering taking a break at a luxury Caribbean coastal resort in Mexico may decide to opt for a yacht charter trip instead after it emerged a plan to replenish sand on the country's beaches has hit a snag. The £45 million scheme has been delayed after it was revealed that removing 6.2 million cubic metres from a sandbank near Cozumel Island could damage ecosystems such as coral reef, the Guardian revealed.
Mexican Centre for Environmental Law spokesperson Alejanda Serrano called the idea "absurd".
"We understand it is necessary to fill out the beaches but it needs to be done without sacrificing other places," she told the newspaper.
The dredging was due to begin last month, but environmentalists raised concerns that the facts used to obtain permission to proceed were flawed.
A federal judge has now ordered the critics to pay £680,000 in lost earnings if the case goes against them, leading the campaigners to file for an injunction to review the bond requirement.
Those looking to avoid Mexico's beaches might decide to explore those of the Caribbean's many small islands.
A trip aboard a luxury chartered yacht, such as Diamond Girl-II, could be the ideal way to enjoy the tropical region.

"I would recommend Dream Marine to others. Everyone was easygoing and helpful. I didn’t mind who I talked to. It was all good. Shame having to come back to London afterwards.
Come on Chris… when’s the next one?"
