Classic vessel wins Lord Howe Island Yacht RaceIan Kiernan has won the Hempel Paints 36th Gosford to Lord Howe Island Yacht Race in the Tasman Sea.

Sailing Sanyo Maris, Mr Keirnan took 12.5 hours to complete the final leg of the 414-nautical mile competition.

His 51-year-old classic vessel proved there is still life in it by winning its second successive IRC handicap victory with just less than three hours to spare.

"I've never sailed in a race quite like this one … it was such a pleasant sail across to this magnificent island," the veteran said.

The sailor now plans to compete in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, which will see him put his $19,000 (£10,443) vessel against boats which cost more than 50 times that amount.

He represents a number of yacht clubs, including the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club and the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron.

Meanwhile, Jessica Watson - the 16-year-old Australian attempting to become the youngest person ever to sail non-stop around the world - has revealed on her blog that today (November 3rd) has been slow going due to a lack of wind.

The young sailor is currently heading for Cape Horn at the most southerly tip of South America.

Yacht Testimonials
"I would recommend Dream Marine to others. Everyone was easygoing and helpful. I didn’t mind who I talked to. It was all good. Shame having to come back to London afterwards.

Come on Chris… when’s the next one?"
