Yacht floats away with pensioner's life savings
Jul 3rd, 2009
A retired teacher who had stashed all his worldly possessions and his £6,000 life savings onboard his 24 foot yacht watched in horror as his vessel sank off the coast of Dorset.Jon Orme-Dawson, 61, had placed his retirement nest-egg in a water tight container which floated out to see after his wooden-hulled boat crashed into rocks.
The yacht, named Hanser, has now been hauled in and the sailor is living on its deck.
With no money, however, Mr Orme-Dawson is surviving off of handouts from the locals.
He told the Daily Mail: "Some people saw me and offered me some clothes and a bed and I stayed with them for a few days.
"Volunteers have been helping me get the boat back together, but I think I will need about £6,000 to get her re-floated."
Mr Orme-Dawson went on to say that he is still hoping to get his antique yacht back in the water and plans to remain in the area.

"I would recommend Dream Marine to others. Everyone was easygoing and helpful. I didn’t mind who I talked to. It was all good. Shame having to come back to London afterwards.
Come on Chris… when’s the next one?"
