Drama as racing yachts collide
Nov 23rd, 2009
The Hull & Humber and Cork yachts have had to return to harbour in South Africa after colliding at the start of the fourth leg of the Clipper Round-the-World Race. While none of the crew were hurt, both yachts are undergoing assessment and are likely to need repairs after the former's port aft quarter came into contact with the latter's bow.
Meanwhile, the other eight yachts are pulling ahead on their way to Geraldton, Western Australia.
When the two ailing vessels do get underway again, they will have 4,700 miles over which to catch up with the rest of the pack, although their chances of winning this leg appear to have been dashed almost before it began.
"This is a closely contested race and this kind of thing happens in fiercely competitive racing," explained organiser Sir Robin Knox-Johnston.
"For the two damaged boats, repairs will be affected as speedily as possible so they can catch up."
The latest satellite imaging of the race shows that Cape Breton Island and Spirit of Australia appear to be pulling ahead, although Team Finland seem to be attempting to cut a corner by veering east earlier than the rest.

"I would recommend Dream Marine to others. Everyone was easygoing and helpful. I didn’t mind who I talked to. It was all good. Shame having to come back to London afterwards.
Come on Chris… when’s the next one?"
