Luxury yacht charter customers 'should check out Greek culture'
Dec 4th, 2009
Luxury yacht charter passengers heading to Greece and its islands could soon be encouraged to visit the nation's cultural attractions rather than just its beaches. While a private yacht can be a great way to explore the sandy islands and coastline, it can also be used to travel between cultural sites, which one expert feels are essential for the future of the country's tourism sector.
Greek deputy culture and tourism minister Angela Gerekou explained that the sun, sand and sea model of attracting visitors has "exhausted its potential".
She added that there is "a great wish to cultivate the local cultural identity" on the islands, hinting that the nation could be set to change its marketing strategy.
"Tourism makes up 80 per cent of air passengers so it is important that air networks are included [in marketing campaigns]. We need to give Greek tourism a new identity in the market it deserves," Ms Gerekou added.
The country was featured in the recent Thomson & First Choice Top Ten Hot Destinations For 2010.

"I would recommend Dream Marine to others. Everyone was easygoing and helpful. I didn’t mind who I talked to. It was all good. Shame having to come back to London afterwards.
Come on Chris… when’s the next one?"
