An image of a Caribbean sea creature has won a prestigious photographic competition in National Geographic. The magazine chose William Goodwin's shot of a shrimp inside a branching vase sponge as its 2009 International Photography Contest winner.
According to the publication, he took the photograph while 23 metres under water near the Caribbean island of Bonaire - an image which beat 208,000 entries to scoop first place.
Described by one judge as a "technically difficult shot" that was "beautifully ... executed in its own natural landscape", the winning photo will now see Mr Goodwin given an all-expenses paid trip to the National Geographic museum in Washington, DC.
"This image transports the viewer to another world," said National Geographic design editor Darren Smith.
"The technical execution is flawless, the spiralling composition frames the shrimp and draws us in, and the lighting and varied colours add dimension."
Bonaire is part of The Netherlands Antilles and is one of the most southerly islands in the Caribbean archipelago.

"I would recommend Dream Marine to others. Everyone was easygoing and helpful. I didn’t mind who I talked to. It was all good. Shame having to come back to London afterwards.
Come on Chris… when’s the next one?"
