Spirit of Australia just missed out on victory in their home stop of the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race as they were marginally beaten to the finish line by Team Finland.Cheered on by luxury yacht charter fans, the Australians got to within 33 minutes of the winners in what was the closest result to date in the Southern Ocean leg running from Cape Town in South Africa.
Australia skipper Brendan Hall said: "I'm a little disappointed that we weren't able to catch Team Finland but elated with the reception we've received here, it's absolutely amazing.
"My crew has worked really hard and we've done our best."
Jamaica Lightning Bolt claimed the final podium place from the race, just holding off the challenge of Cape Breton Island in fourth.
All of the crews will now take a break to enjoy Christmas in Australia before embarking on the next leg of the race to Singapore, up the Western Australia coast.
Over 400 individuals are competing in the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race, which runs for ten months and began in the north of England in September.

"I would recommend Dream Marine to others. Everyone was easygoing and helpful. I didn’t mind who I talked to. It was all good. Shame having to come back to London afterwards.
Come on Chris… when’s the next one?"
