Watson climbs yacht mast in record-breaking quest

Jessica Watson has successfully completed the potentially hazardous task of climbing the mast as she continues in her quest to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world non-stop and unassisted.The 16-year-old from Australia has now reached day 60 in her task and is close to surpassing the 7,000 nautical mile mark in her yacht, called Ella's Pink Lady.
Watson donned all of her protective gear to complete the climbing task to tick off all the items on her checklist, which including carrying out safety checks and dropping the mainsail.
According to the youngster's website, her mum Julie said: "Jess has trained hard at this task for over a year, so we were all confident of her skills.
"Full credit also to David Lambourne, who supplied and installed all of the rigging. It has just given Jess and all of us so much extra confidence as she heads into the Southern Ocean."
To qualify for around the world status, Watson must cover an approximate distance of 23,000 nautical miles, cross all lines of longitude, cross the equator, round southern South America and Africa and begin and end at the same port.
