Cyclone improves fast-time possibility in Sydney yachting race
Dec 24th, 2009
A new race record could be set in this year's Sydney to Hobert dash as beneficial conditions for the yachts taking part have been predicted.Weather forecasters expect gusty winds created by Cyclone Laurence could be in favour of the teams racing down the eastern coast, which puts the current record of one day and 14 hours in jeopardy.
That record in the 628-nautical mile contest was set by Wild Oats in 2005, with the team again being favourites to triumph.
However, the race may be slightly more wide open after Wild Oats had to run last-minute repairs to correct a damaged keel.
This brings others including Leopard into contention, with the team's owner Mike Slade optimistic about the chances of his yacht.
According to AFP, he said: "We have our work cut out, but we have our best chance of winning under the predicted conditions.
"But God knows what we are going to find out there. The weather forecasts are all over the place and apparently it all depends on what ex-tropical Cyclone Laurence decides to do."
The Sydney to Hobert Yacht Race is sponsored by Rolex and will begin on Boxing Day.

"I would recommend Dream Marine to others. Everyone was easygoing and helpful. I didn’t mind who I talked to. It was all good. Shame having to come back to London afterwards.
Come on Chris… when’s the next one?"
