Pirate threat leads to 'military' style yacht defences
Jul 14th, 2009
The threat of piracy is causing many superyacht owners to install military grade defence systems onto their vessels.Millions of pounds are being spent on technology and security-staff to ward of the threat of high-seas criminals, according to a report by CNN.
Speaking to the news provider, technical editor at Super Yacht World magazine, Michael Howorth, said: "It is only a matter of time before pirates move from cargo ships to attacking super-yachts cruising near Somalia.
"Many pirates do not yet appreciate the importance and potential value of these yachts."
He went on to note that many of the superyachts that are afloat today offer pirates a large plunder which could include luxury items, artwork and huge sums of money, which make defence preparations all the more vital.
Roman Abramovich recently set the standard in super yacht defence with his 557-foot Eclipse, which features a missile defence system, armour plated master-suite and a private submarine.

"I would recommend Dream Marine to others. Everyone was easygoing and helpful. I didn’t mind who I talked to. It was all good. Shame having to come back to London afterwards.
Come on Chris… when’s the next one?"
