UK train journey 'more expensive than Caribbean flight'

UK train journey 'more expensive than Caribbean flight'The recent hike in rail prices has led to one ticket costing more than a flight to the Caribbean.

According to the Independent, the £1,002 cost of a train journey from Newquay, Cornwall, to the Kyle of Lochalsh in the Scottish Highlands would easily cover a flight to the tropical archipelago.

The price is for a walk on ticket in first class and is believed to be the single most expensive UK rail trip ever.

Barry Doe - the public transport consultant who carried out the research - revealed that passengers on the 20.5-hour journey would have to change train three times and would need to pay extra for a sleeper cabin.

"No one has actually bought this £1,000 fare but it does exist," a spokesperson for train firm CrossCountry said. "Someone wanting a first-class return would be likely to book a saver return in advance and pay £561."

Those wishing to avoid the UK public transport system may decide instead to fly to the Caribbean and enjoy a private luxury yacht charter.

The Magpie II could be the ideal vessel on which to enjoy a break. Capable of sleeping up to four guests and two crew members, the sailboat boasts its own waterskiing and snorkel equipment as well as having its own chef.

"I would recommend Dream Marine to others. Everyone was easygoing and helpful. I didn’t mind who I talked to. It was all good. Shame having to come back to London afterwards.

Come on Chris… when’s the next one?"
